On Wednesday, February 20, 2019, the chairman of Zoomlion Group of Companies, Mr Joseph Siaw Agyepong, unveiled
a number of Mechanical Street Sweepers in line with President Akufo-Addo’s ‘Clean Accra’ agenda.
Below is the full text of the speech he delivered on the occasion;
I deem it a great honor for us to have the opportunity, once again, to interact to share our collective efforts in improving upon the environmental cleanliness of our dear country. As you are well aware, ensuring sustainable waste management, calls for close collaboration of Government and the Private Sector players. This partner- ship is necessary to support our bid, as a country, to attain the ambitious objectives of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal 6, pertaining to the provision of clean water, sanitation and resiliency to disasters.
It is in this direction that we in Ghana have been fortunate to receive a clarion visionary call from His Excellency the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to purposefully work to ensure that Accra and indeed the entire country is transformed
to attain environmental cleanliness. True to this commitment, a year ago, during the presentation of the 2018 State of the Nation Address to Parliament Mr. President strongly re-echoed his vision, and I quote “There is the urgent need for the public authorities to find means of making our cities clean… Government is working with various private sector operators to tackle this major challenge, with strategies that are intended to effect a change in our attitudes towards waste management… Systematic efforts is being made to resolve the legacy of inherited debt in the sector”
It is in response to this national call for close partnership between the government machinery and the private sector players that we of Zoomlion have been challenged, inspired and motivated to transform our operational activities to respond effectively to Mr. President’s
visionary charge of total environmental cleanliness.
In this respect, Ladies and Gentle- men, permit me to seize this opportunity to sincerely convey on my behalf and on behalf of the entire Zoomlion, our sincere thanks to Mr. President for his personal commitment to ensure sanity in the way we keep our environment. I say so mindful that Mr. President personally took time off his heavy schedule to visit Zoom- lion’s sanitation installations last year to encourage us to contribute our utmost best in the fight against filth of all forms. Once again we remain grateful to Mr.
President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo. We also re- main grateful to the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his support. Ladies and Gentlemen; having been inspired by President Akufo-Addo, we are also grateful that the opportunity has been created for us to interact effectively with the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources (MoS&WR), which has
the mandate of ensuring dedicated policy formulation.
The receptiveness of the Ministry to policy inputs that we in the sector offer, is inuring to the effective development and implementation of sector policies. In this regard we remain grateful to Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Hon. Mrs. Cecilia Abena Dapaah. Our thanks also go to the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Hajia Alima Mahama. With the guidance and support of her Ministry, we continue to effectively interact with the 254 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) with whom we have Public Private Partnership (PPP) collaborations in waste management activities in our communities. We sincerely
cherish our collaboration and seize this opportunity to further thank all the Honorable Chief Executives of the MMDAs and their supporting Hon Assemblymen.
Very soon with the support of the Ministry we will strike collaboration with the addi- tional districts just created. To our Parliamentarians we equally owe you are great thanks for the sector’s legislative oversight that you are so dearly concerned about. We accordingly appreciate your occasional visits to our waste processing sites to be abreast with the prog- ress we are making in the industry. Nii Mei, Naa Mei and all Traditional Leaders;
The demonstration of your immense leadership roles in our communities that we engage is highly appreciated. While we extend our thanks to you we assure you that we will continue to intensify our collaboration with you so that through you we can gain the total commitment
of the citizenry to keep our environment clean. On this note I wish to assure you all that as we continue to enjoy the support
of Government we will be committed the more to pursue with zeal our aspirations in waste management development in our dear country Ghana. Let me humbly add that it is this zeal to pursue our focus on environmental cleanliness that has also enabled Zoomlion to extend its operations to other African countries such as Togo, Angola, Zambia and Equatorial Guinea, Liberia among others. Ladies and Gentlemen; We of Zoomlion believe we are capable of partnering government to solve the waste problems as we hold the working
philosophy that waste management is much more than refuse collection and disposal. This commitment has empowered us during the past 13 years that Zoomlion has been in existence to initiate a number of service provision in the following areas beyond public cleansing:-

I sincerely thank the Mayor of Accra for facilitating land allocation for the project. And let me add that it has job creating capability for about 120 youth.
Ladies and Gentlemen;
The climax of our interaction here today once more is in response to the vision of Mr President, expressed at the launch
of the Natonal Sanitation Campaign at State House in November, 2018. At the ceremony, among the components of the
campaign announced, Mr. President advocated for the introduction of Automated Sweepers to be deployed to help speed up the cleaning of streets with major concentration of traffic. It is in response to this government’s policy direction that Zoomlion was chal- lenged to demonstrate zeal in that direc- tion. In this regard, I am glad to have you join us to unveil 10 Mechanical Street Sweepers to augment the great work being done by our women and men who have over the years worked so hard to
keep our ceremonial streets clean. Indeed the introduction of the Street Sweepers, it is noted, will also help minimize the risk of vehicular “knock downs” accidents encountered by some of our cleaners along the major ceremonial roads which have high rate of vehicular
traffic. With an investment of $2 million Dollars made so far, these Street Sweepers will be deployed, in consultation with the governmental authorities, at various ceremonial and major streets of selected cities in Ghana to ensure their optimum
Ladies and Gentlemen; Zoomlion is poised to heed the Pres- ident’s recent call that “Every Day is A Sanitation Day”. To keep the pace of ensuring sustainable development of Integrated Waste Management solution, we are mindful of the need to promote vigorous Research and Development (R&D) in the sector. Accordingly we are leaving no stone unturned in teaming up with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and the University of Ghana in carrying out our research and development activities. This is with the view to ensuring that we will keep pace with the infusion of technology to propel the national agenda on environmental
hygiene and sanitation.
Our quest to maintain high international standard in our waste management value chain infrastructure development has attracted the attention of Harvard University Centre for African Studies and we are collaborating in this direction. Not quite long we also received twenty students from the Buffalo University in America who visited our facility and get
some insights about our operations and also share their perspectives. We are indeed committed to transform every Region with innovative ways of solving waste problems and we thank the Government for its partnership commitment. On this note, permit me to end my address by extending once again my sincere thanks to all of you for making time to come and share your quality time with us as we introduce the use Mechanical Road Sweepers to enhance our cleaning service delivery.
I thank you.
